Ysgol Pontfadog

Pontfadog is a small village in between Chirk and Glyn Ceiriog. The ' Bridge of Madoc ' from which the village takes its name, lies just behind the War Memorial. It is a fine, high arch over the swiftly flowing River Ceiriog.

In the village there is a good and very friendly PO and general store, a fine Inn , a helpful garage and the Tramway museum waiting room. All are well worth a visit.

In Pontfadog lives the oldest oak tree in Britain which was spared when King Henry II had his men cut down the Ceiriog Woods in 1165. Fortunately the woods recovered, as they have done since being permanently covered in dust from the quarrying of the 19th century.

It is a 100 years since our school was built and we have celebrated the occasion in style.  Key among them is  a book about the history of the school based on the memories of past pupils and teachers and a tapestry made by pupils, parents, staff,  and past pupils and their parents.  Today we have just 30 pupils and as always the children have the incredible benefit of a small school community atmosphere. But in the past, when there were evacuees posted in the Ceiriog Valley, numbers went right up to over 100 all squeezed into the old school building.

Our 2008 Centenary Celebration was  on Saturday, 28th June and we invited as many past pupils and staff as we could to join us for the children’s concert and the school fete.

School Profile

Pontfadog School provides pre school and primary school education for children between the ages of 3 and 11. We have a staff of three teachers and nursery assistant and 2 classroom assistants. We also have a parent who runs our very popular and successful After School Club. To find out more about the school and what we provide for our children and local community.

We are bound to say that Pontfadog School has an excellent reputation both in the standard of education provided and in the care and attention we show our children. BUT WE CAN, because our Ofsted inspection of March 1999 and 2004 confirmed it.

As a small rural school, we have a highly active and committed group of parents, teachers and friends that put in a lot of time and great effort to run and support the school. Our school PTA has been so successful in recent years that it has been obliged by law to become a charitable trust due to the amount of funds it raises on an annual basis for the school.

The current members on our board of Governors boast a wealth of experience of business acumen, teaching experience and knowledge of what they want as parents to ensure that the school is managed in a professional and efficient manner, without losing the ethos of which the school is so proud.

Please take the time to have a good look round our website, much of which is maintained by the children themselves. If you like what you see (or if you don't), let us know by contacting us.

We hope that we have set out our website to make navigation easy for you and to provide a natural flow through our pages.

And, of course, you may want to know exactly where we are

The School Ethos and Aims

All children need love, care, time and understanding. Their primary education is a vital part of a growing awareness of the wider world, for which they need to gain knowledge and skills essential to life, and to become more fulfilled citizens.

It is of the utmost importance that that a child is happy at school. We aim to provide a caring, secure and stimulating environment where each child may achieve his/her full potential.

We believe each child is an individual, with individual needs, and we endeavour to develop enquiring, confident and independent thinkers and learners, through a curriculum, which is broad, balanced and relevant to each child. We wish to develop each child’s ability to listen, communicate, discover, understand and question.

Children learn best from situations in which they are actively involved. The enthusiasm, energy and stimuli for learning at school,  comes from the relationships between children and their teachers. We have high expectations of our children and, together with mutual trust and understanding, this generates active and purposeful teaching and learning.
